HGTV Recognizes Downtown Conway as One of America’s Most Charming Small Downtowns
CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) – Downtown Conway is in the national spotlight after being recognized by HGTV as one of the “Most Charming Small Downtowns” in the country.
Conway was one of just 40 communities across the U.S. highlighted for this honor, showcasing the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and community spirit.
“We’re excited,” said Conway City Council member William Goldfinch. “It’s an honor. These recognitions keep adding up because people inside and outside of Conway see the work being done to enhance quality of life here—and they want to be a part of it.”
Why Conway Made the List
HGTV praised the city’s historic district, scenic Riverwalk, vibrant culinary offerings, public murals, and beloved traditions like its Halloween celebrations.
Residents and business owners credit much of the buzz to years of revitalization in the downtown area.
“When we moved here in 2014, we saw the first signs of change when they redid the mural with the steamboat,” said Robert Martire, co-owner of Our Next Chapter Bookstore. “Since then, the growth has been steady, and downtown just keeps getting better.”
More Than Just the Scenery
For many locals, Conway’s charm isn’t just about the aesthetics—it’s about the people.
“This is a very down-to-earth place when it comes to family and community,” said resident Michael Russo. “The shops down here really carry that spirit on their shoulders, and they do a great job of being there for the people who live here.”
Goldfinch noted that national recognition also gives the city insight into what to add moving forward—such as more entertainment options for residents and visitors.
South Carolina on the Map
Conway isn’t the only South Carolina community on HGTV’s list. Greenville also earned a spot, showing that the Palmetto State’s downtowns continue to impress on a national scale.
